About us
The Aparados da Serra Geral Canyoneer Association (ACASERG) is a civil association whose purpose is to develop activities in the Aparados da Serra Geral canyons. Included within the Association’s objectives are: promoting the practice of canyoning, improving the technical skills of its members and developing techniques and equipment appropriate to the region. The Association also aims to foster collaboration with other similar entities and to assist governmental and non-governmental organizations in activities related to the Aparados da Serra Geral canyons. Furthermore, ACASERG seeks to promote canyoning as a minimum impact activity and to enhance ecological awareness.

Canyoning
Canyoning is an activity that consists of descending canyons, following a watercourse (even if the watercourse is intermittent, causing the canyon to be dry sometimes), using appropriate techniques and equipment. During the descent, the practitioner will face several vertical and aquatic obstacles, using techniques specific to canyoning, as well as techniques imported or adapted from speleology, mountaineering and whitewater sports.
The Aparados da Serra Region
The Aparados da Serra Geral region is located in the southern region of Brazil, in the eastern portion of the border between the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. It is a region of international environmental and geological relevance.
The environmental relevance of Aparados da Serra Geral is attested to by the existence of several federal, state and municipal conservation units, including three national parks in the region: the Aparados da Serra National Park, the Serra Geral National Park and the São Joaquim National Park The national parks aim to preserve natural ecosystems of great ecological importance and scenic beauty, as well as to conduct scientific research, and develop environmental interpretation and education activities, recreation in contact with nature and ecological tourism. The plurality of ecosystems, which include, among others, high-altitude fields, araucaria forests and the Atlantic Forest, is a result of the region’s unique relief, characterized by an abrupt transition between the plateau and the coastal plain, with vertical walls up to 700 meters high. In addition, the region has a rich biodiversity, with the presence of several species of endemic flora and fauna.
The geological relevance of Aparados da Serra Geral led to the creation, in April 2022, of the Caminhos dos Cânions do Sul Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark, which is part of the Global Network of Geoparks [ Global Network of National Geoparks ]. The Geopark encompasses locations and landscapes that have international geological relevance, as they record key aspects and stages of the Earth’s geological history, bringing together geological sites of scientific importance, rarity and beauty, adding archaeological, ecological, historical and cultural value.
